This class combines aerobic dance with Latin and international music. A cardiovascular workout that tones the body, improves flexibility, and boosts energy levels.

Zumba® works because it does not feel like exercise. The music does the pacing for you — salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton and a run of international rhythms, each with its own set of moves and its own tempo. Fast tracks push your heart rate up, slower ones bring it back down, and the class moves through those peaks and valleys without you ever having to think about intervals.

You follow the instructor rather than learn routines in advance. Moves are cued visually as they come, and every song repeats its patterns enough times that you find your footing partway through and finish it strong. There is no counting in, no stopping to break down an eight-count, and nothing to memorise before you arrive.

It is genuinely all levels. Some people go full out on every track; others keep it low and steady and still leave having worked. Both are the class working as intended. Because the movement is lateral, rotational and constantly changing direction, you end up using muscles and ranges of motion that walking or cycling never touch — which is where the flexibility and coordination benefits come from.

Nobody expects you to get the steps right first time, and nobody is watching to see whether you do. The room is full of people at every stage, from students who have been coming for years to someone on their first ever class, and the format absorbs all of them without anyone feeling out of place. Miss a turn, laugh, pick it back up on the next chorus — that is what the class looks like when it is going well.

Wear shoes with a reasonably smooth sole so you can pivot without your foot catching, and bring more water than you think you need. Stand wherever you can see the instructor clearly; new people often like a spot in the middle rows where there are people to follow on all sides.
